Ha-Lo Industries Inc. filed Chapter 11 as part of a strategy to
continue operating as it reorganizes. Included in the filing were
its Starbelly.com Inc. and Lee Wayne Corp. units. In conjunction
with the filing, made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware,
Ha-Lo arranged for $30 million in financing through its two main
lenders, LaSalle Bank and Comerica. The Niles, Il. distributor
of promotional products has been plagued by ongoing losses and
problems at its Starbelly.com unit, which is it last year for
$240 million. Ha-Lo, which last year reported an operating loss

LTV Corp. has received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court
for a labor contract. According to the contract, the Cleveland,
Oh.-based steelmaker, which has been reorganizing under Chapter
11 since last December, would end up 20%-owned by its United Steelworkers
of America employees. The deal, which the court accepted over
shareholders' objections, would permit LTV to trim its payroll
by the equivalent of 1,300 full-time employees.

Krause's Furniture Co., a Brea, Ca. manufacturer and retailer

Krause's, which has reportedly obtained a commitment for a debtor-in-possession
financing package, plans on closing some of its distribution centers
and showrooms and trimming its payroll by about 100 employees
as it attempts to restructure its operations.
Comdisco Inc. recieved word from SunGard Data Systems Inc., a
Wayne, Pa. software firm, that it's interested in making a bid
to purchase Comdisco's computer-disaster-recovery business. Comdisco
has also been negotiating to sell its leasing unit to General
Electric Co. of Fairfield, Ct. The leasing unit's book value was
recently estimated to be about $4.5 billion. As part of its bankruptcy
restructuring, Comdisco had earlier agreed to sell its technology-services
division to Hewlett-Packard Co. of Palo Alto, Ca. for $610 million.
Rosemont, Il.-based Comdisco recently filed Chapter 11 in U.S.
Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois listing
assets and liabilities of $7.5 billion and $6.7 billion respectively.
USG Corp.'s stock has been faring well since the firm filed Chapter
11 in June. Its share price has jumped more than 60% since the

Comdisco Inc., coming off a number of years of risky investments,
has now filed Chapter 11. In conjunction with the filing, the
Rosemont, Il. firm agreed to sell its technology-services division
to Hewlett-Packard Co. of Palo Alto, Ca. for $610 million. The
deal is subject to approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which
means that other suitors may submit bids for the unit. Comdisco
also said that its technology-leasing business would also be auctioned
off in court. Comdisco's filing, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court
for the Northern District of Illinois, listed assets and liabilities
of $7.5 billion and $6.7 billion respectively. The firm hopes
to emerge from bankruptcy protection early next year, but it would
be a small shell of its former high-flying self.
HomeLife Corp. of Hoffman Estates, Il., which recently shut down

filing for bankruptcy protection, that it has a good chance of

HomeLife Furniture Corp., a Hoffman Estates, Il.-based chain
of 133 furniture stores, closed its doors and is thought to be
about to file for bankruptcy protection. The retailer, once a
unit of Sears, Roebuck and Co. (Sears still holds a 19% stake
in the company), has been facing cash-flow problems, but did raise
$65 million in emergency financing in May and had spent heavily
on July advertising. With $680 million in sales last year, HomeLife
is the eighth-largest furniture retailer but ran into ongoing
distribution and customer-service problems since it was bought
by Citigroup Venture Capital three years ago.
Polaroid Corp. got a reprieve from its bankers, which have granted
the Cambridge, Ma. camera company an extension on its loan-covenant
waivers until 10/12. The agreement gives Polaroid much-needed
time to renegotiate its loans. In addition, Polaroid has put itself
on the selling block and retained Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein
and Merrill Lynch & Co. to assist it in finding buyers for
all or part of the company. Some analysts had thought that without
the waiver Polaroid would be forced to file for bankruptcy protection
in order to restructure its finances. The company currently has
more than $1 billion in revolving credit, bonds and other obligations.

Commodore Holdings Ltd., a Hollywood, Fl.-based operator of cruise
ships, ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy protection along
with several affiliated companies and said it would liquidate.
The filing, made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Lauderdale,
estimated the company's assets at about $175 million.
LTV Corp. has reached a tentative agreement on a labor contract
with the United Steelworkers of America. LTV, which filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last December, is trying to cut
its annual budget by $800 million in order to save costs. The
Cleveland, Oh.-based steelmaker, which had warned it would have
to liquidate unless it got significant concessions on wages and
benefits from its steelworkers, reported losses last year of $719
million on sales of $4.9 billion. On a negative note, General
Motors Corp., which accounts for about 9% of LTV's sales, said
it would drop LTV as a supplier by the end of the year. GM's decision
throws a wrench into LTV's hopes to eventually emerge from bankruptcy
protection.
Cooker Restaurant Corp., a West Palm Beach, Fl. firm that recently
filed Chapter 11, got a small reprieve for its turnaround efforts
after receiving a $1 million loan from one of its shareholders.
Cooker's management concedes, nonetheless, that a lot of work
remains for the firm to restructure. The company, which made its
filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District
of Ohio, must cut its debt of about $115 million, as listed in
its filing, compared with assets of between $10 million and $50
million. Cooker, which lost $29 million last year, has already
closed twelve restaurants and is looking to sell twenty others.

AMF Bowling Worldwide Inc., an operator of more than 500 bowling
centers, has now filed Chapter 11 as part of an attempt to restructure
its operations and pay down its debt. In conjunction with the
filing, AMF, which has lost more than $225 million over the past
two years, agreed on a $75 million financing package with its
lenders. The Mechanicsburg, Va.-based firm, which also supplies
bowling equipment, said it will continue operating as it restructures.
As of the end of March, AMF listed assets and liabilities of $1.7
billion and $1.3 billion respectively. The filing does not include
its parent company, AMF Bowling Inc.
Lionbridge Technologies Inc., a Waltham, Ma. provider of multilingual
Internet services, has reportedly reached an agreement to acquire
the Mendez unit of Lernout & Hauspie Products NV, the financially
troubled Belgian-based software company. Lionbridge will pay $27
million in cash and assume an additional $6 million of Lernout's
debtload. The move is part of Lernout's restructuring under bankruptcy
protection. The Mendez unit that Lionbridge is purchasing has
annual revenue of about $80 million.
Avenex Corp., a Fremont, Ca. maker of fiberoptic communications
components, is reducing its payroll by 300 employees (40% of its
workforce). The company, which is falling short of its financial
targets for the fourth quarter, will take restructuring charges
of up to $28 million for the fourth quarter related to the cutbacks.
Saflink Corp., a Redmond, Wa. security-software company, announced
plans to slash its payroll by 42% in an effort to conserve cash.
Saflink, which recently secured $8 million to continue operating,
said it will take unspecfied charges in its second quarter related
to the layoffs.
Rent-Way Inc., in a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange
Commission, received a critical evaluation from PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The big accounting firm reported that the Erie, Pa. rent-to-own
firm's debt-covenant violations indicate "substantial"
doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern.
Rent-Way, which has been under investigation since last fall regarding
a reported $129 million in accounting improprieties, has been
in violation of certain covenants of its $435 million credit facility.
Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y. has announced a restructuring
plan aimed at getting the company back on its feet. Ellis, which
has lost $18 million over the past five years, said that it will
cut thirty-five positions from its staff and restructure its management
in an attempt to break even by next year. Last year the hospital's
operating expenses reached nearly $133 million, which resulted
in a $14.4 million operating loss in 2000. Part of Ellis's financial
probelsm stem from cutacks in Medicaid reimbursements.

$133 million of Amresco's debt.
Foster & Gallagher Inc., a Grand Rapids, Mi. catalog and
Internet retailer, filed Chapter 11. Included in the filig were
twenty-one of Foster & Gallagher's subsidiaries. The privately-held
company added that it will lay off a significant portion of its
workforce.
Metricom Inc., a San Jose, Ca. high-speed Internet-access firm,
has now filed for bankruptcy protection. The firm said it would
continue providing service for its 40,000 subscribers, but it
isn't certain what the longer-term prospects are for the company.
Bluff City Furniture Inc. in Alton, Il. has now seen a $7,300
state of Missouri tax lien filed against it.
Japan Motors Corp. in Miami, Fl. has now seen a $295,600 judgement
issued against it in Broward County, Fl. In favor of Sadisco of
Florida.
Fuel Outlet, a chain of unmanned gas outlets in Wichita, Ks.
and Kansas City, Mo., has now reached an out-of-court settlement
to pay Gary-Williams Energy Corp. of Denver $171,500 for unpaid
gasoline billings.
