National Record Mart Inc., a Pittsburgh, Pa.-based music retailer which has lost money in its last two fiscal years, announced that it will hire a financial adviser to assist it in exploring strategic alternatives. The company, which has faced weaker-than-anticipated sales at about fifty stores it has opened over the past year and a half, operates a total of more than 170 outlets under the Music Oasis, Music X, NRM Music, Vibes Music and Wave Music names.

Peapod Inc., Shareholders of Peapod Inc., the Skokie, Il.-based online grocery-services firm, have approved a more than $72 million investment from Ahold NV of the Netherlands in a deal which provides Ahold with Peapod preferred stock that is convertible into a 51% interest of Peapod's common shares. Peapod, which reported a loss of $12.7 million on sales of nearly $25 million in its first quarter, hopes to build up its business by working with Ahold, which owns several food chains along the East Coast.

A-One Professional Property Service Inc., San Mateo, Ca., has now filed Chapter 7 listing assets of only $3,700 and liabilities of nearly $1.4 million.

Bagel King Inc., Walnut Creek, Ca., has now filed Chapter 7 listing assets of less than $12,000 and liabilities of $875,000. 

Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, a Clearwater, Fl.-based restaurant chain, wants to expand its franchise business by as many as fifty locations over the next five years as part of its efforts to increase its marketshare. In order to help fund its strategy, the company plans on selling up to 75% of its company-owned restaurants nationwide to franchisees. The firm has already sold more than fifty of its Rally's hamburger eateries to one privately-held franchisee, Altes LLC of Boca Raton, Fl., for more than $16 million. Despite Checkers' aggressive franchise-expansion plan, it should be noted that the restaurant operator has had difficulty in recent years, facing continued losses, including last year's net loss of $23 million on revenue of just under $90 million. The firm also recently signed up for a $40 million credit line with Textron Financial in order to help pay off certain senior notes.

Crumpets Inc. in Comanche, Tx. has now filed Chapter 7. No schedules were listed in the filing.  The company also does business as Country Boys Food Stores.

Floor Source Distributors Inc., Marietta, Ga., has now filed Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The case number is 00-68190. No schedules were listed in the filing. 

McDay Energy Partners Ltd., Boerne, Tx., has now filed Chapter 11. No schedules were listed in the filing. 

McLaren/Hart Inc., a Rancho Cordova, Ca. environmental-engineering firm which has been losing money for nearly five years, has now filed Chapter 11. McLaren, which until now has been selling off property and other assets in order to cover its operational losses, has run out of assets to sell and is now trying to develop a plan to handle its debtload. The company will also shift its focus from hazardous-waste remediation services to infrastructure engineering and related services. New American Healthcare Corp. of Brentwood, Tn., which filed Chapter 11 in April, has announced that it will sell its Crosby Memorial Hospital in Picayune, Ms. to Picayune LLC for an undisclosed amount. 

Northern Steel Co. Inc. in San Leandro, Ca. has now seen an involuntary Chapter 7 petition filed against it. No schedules were listed in the filing.  The company also does business as Washington Northern Steel.

Overseas Equipment Inc., Atlanta, Ga., has now filed Chapter 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The case number is 00-68038. No schedules were listed in the filing.

ETM Entertainment Network Inc. in Costa Mesa, Ca. said that it s laying off its 100 employees and closing its doors.

Iguana Marketing Inc., Sarasota, Fl., has now filed Chapter 7 listing assets and liabilities of $168,000 and $730,000 respectively. 

Kaiser Group International Inc.An 8/15 deadline has been set for filing proof of claims in the Kaiser Group International Inc. Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  For further information contact the debtor's attorney, Norman Pemick, at 302-421-6824.

Oregon Potato Co., Boardman, Or., has now filed Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Portland. The firm listed assets and liabilities of $39.5 million and $36.4 million respectively. The case number is 00-34578.

Safety-Kleen Corp., Columbia, S.C., has requested permission from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to sell its 44% interest in its SK Europe Inc. unit to Electra European Fund LP for $35.7 million. The move is part of the waste firm's strategy to sell off noncore assets. A 7/19 hearing on the matter has been scheduled in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.

Stone & Webster Inc., a Boston, Ma. engineering company, has received an offer to be purchased by Shaw Group Inc. of Baton Rouge, La. for $163 million. This tops an earlier offer from Jacobs Engineering Group of Pasadena, Ca., which in June agreed to pay $150 million in cash and assume $450 million of Stone & Webster's debtload. Stone & Webster last month filed Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware listing assets and liabilities of $917 million and $604 million respectively.

Stooge Restaurant Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa., has now filed Chapter 11. No schedules were listed in the filing. 

United Cos. Financial Corp. An 8/15 hearing has been scheduled to consider the sale motion in the United Cos. Financial Corp. Chapter 11 bankruptcy. For further information contact the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware at 302-573-6174.
